How does jailbreaking and rooting differ from each other?

Rooting is the process of installing the su binary executable/ su linux command on an android. This often involves unlocking a bootloader and replacing the recovery of an android device and generally differes amoung devices.

Jailbreak is a custom ROM for an apple mobile device running iOS much like Cyanogenmod. It involves replacing your apple iOS with a jalibreak OS greater than or equal to the version of the current apple iOS version on your device. It can be done directly using itunes

Baically rooting and jailbreak is same thing, but root is for android mobile and jailbreak is for iPhones or iDevices. After rooting or jailbreaking the GOD mode of your phone is activated. There is no any limitation or restriction on your device.

Risks involved in rooting or jailbreaking

  • After jailbroken/rooted your device will not be secured, any malicious activities can be done from that type of devices.
  • There are tons of freely available tools that can be applied to jailbroken/rooted devices that can speed up reverse engineering. For example, SSLKillSwitch can be used to break SSL pinning features in app Also, hooking becomes easier.
  • On jailbroken iOS devices, another advantage for reverse engineers is that it's possible to install and use apps signed with a personal certificate for an unlimited time.
  • Another important risk on both Android and iOS is malware. Malware can infect a jailbroken iOS device, either by a malicious app that was sideloaded, or via SSH. In 2009, an internet worm was spread that targeted jailbroken iOS devices that had SSH enabled with the default password (alpine). The worm compromised banking transactions made with the jailbroken device. Not only can malware find its way more easily onto a jailbroken or rooted device, it can also execute commands with root privileges, enabling that malware to control data of other applications (including sensitive data, such as account credentials.)

What are some the things that can be done with a Jailbroken or Rooted smartphone?
